Joseph S. Gans III, president of WYLN-TV and president-CEO of Gans Multimedia Partnership in Hazleton, has received the Broadband Cable Association of Pennsylvania's annual President's Award.

The award honors an employee of an association-member company who has contributed significantly to the development and success of the organization's programs and events, a press release from the association states.

"Joey has demonstrated his support for BCAP time and time again for several decades, and in so many ways," said Dan Tunnell, association president, in presenting the award at its recent Cable Academy conference in Harrisburg. "Yet with all these credentials, our awardee has a list that's even more impressive - that of the service to and volunteer efforts in the community he loves."

Prior to his lengthy career in the cable industry, Gans studied engineering at the University of Miami and served in the armed forces as a Mohawk pilot supporting combat operations in Vietnam, North Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. In total, he has logged more than 25,000 hours in the cockpit.

After his military career and graduate courses in mechanical engineering at Penn State, he helped grow Gans Multimedia Partnership - his father was cable pioneer Joseph S. Gans Sr. - to serve more than 200,000 subscribers in 17 states. Gans also was involved with building Pennarama, a statewide interconnection for delivering educational courses to 4.5 million homes across Pennsylvania. Pennarama evolved into the Pennsylvania Cable Network, of which Gans was a board member and chief engineer.

Elected in 1983 to the national Cable TV Pioneers as its youngest member, Gans assumed the role of CEO for the family cable operations from 1989 until 2004, when the majority of holdings was merged with MetroCast Communications. He has served BCAP for many years as a member of the board of directors, including as its chairman in 1993 and 1994. Gans has remained active throughout the Hazleton area, particularly in programs that fund cancer treatment and help children with special needs. He has been involved with the American Cancer Society and Helping Hands Society telethons in Hazleton.

And over the course of the last 14 years, he and his wife, Pat, have helped raised more than $100,000 for the Pennsylvania cable political action committee by hosting shooting competitions at their Whitetail Preserve complex near Conyngham.

Gans is currently president of Cable Equipment and Service Co. in Hazleton, a multi-service supplier to the telecommunications industry.

BCAP, a member-driven organization based in Harrisburg and founded in 1957, actively promotes broadband cable and telecommunications industry issues in Pennsylvania, including the development of advances in technology, programming and the Internet. Its membership includes broadband cable companies serving nearly 3 million Pennsylvania cable customers and national industry equipment suppliers and programmers. - Hazelton Standard Speaker
